If the distance between two bodies becomes half, then the gravitational force between them becomes four times greater than the initial value.

  • If two bodies having masses 'm_{1}' and 'm_{2}' are at a distance 'r' from each other, then according to the Universal Law of Gravitation;

        The gravitational force between the two bodies is;

              F = (G x m_{1} x m_{2}) / r², where 'G' is the gravitational constant.

  • This law proves that the force 'F' between the two bodies 'm_{1}' and    'm_{2} ' is inversely proportional to the square of the distance 'r'  between them

              i.e; F ∝  (1 / r²)

  • When r becomes r/2,

                   F ∝ (2/r)²

               ⇒ F ∝ 4/r²

               ⇒ F ∝ 4(1/r²)

               ⇒ F = 4 (G x m_{1} x m_{2}) / r²

  • This proves that when distance is halved, the force increases by four times.
