nth term of AP is x + (n-1)y or x - y + ny if first term of an A.P. is x and common difference is y
Given:
- An AP
- First term = x
- Common Difference = y
To Find:
- nth term of AP
Solution:
Arithmetic sequence
Sequence of terms in which difference between one term and the next is a constant.
This is also called Arithmetic Progression AP
Arithmetic sequence can be represented in the form :
a, a + d , a + 2d , …………………………, a + (n-1)d
a = First term
d = common difference = aₙ-aₙ₋₁
nth term = aₙ = a + (n-1)d
Step 1:
First term = a = x
Common difference d = y
Step 2:
Use formula for nth term aₙ = a + (n-1)d and substitute a = X and d= Y
aₙ = x + (n-1)y
=> aₙ = x - y + ny
Hence, nth term of AP is x + (n-1)y or x - y + ny if first term of an A.P. is x and common difference is y
