The percentage change in its area is 16 %

Solution:

The area of triangle is given as:

Area\ of\ triangle = \frac{1}{2} \times b \times h

Where, b is the base and h is the height

The height of a triangle is decreased by 40%

Therefore,

New\ height = h - 40 \% \times h\\\\New\ height = h(1-40 \%)\\\\New\ height = h(1-\frac{40}{100})\\\\New\ height = h(1-0.4)\\\\New\ height = 0.6h

Its base is increased by 40%

Therefore,

New\ base = b + 40 \% \times b\\\\New\ base = b + 0.4b\\\\New\ base = 1.4b

Therefore,

New\ area = \frac{1}{2} \times 1.4b \times 0.6h\\\\New\ area = 0.84 \times \frac{1}{2} \times b \times h\\\\New\ area = 0.84 \times Area\ of\ triangle

The new area is 84% of the original area

Therefore the area is reduced by 16%
