Mean = Sum of all values / Toal number of values

Come back to your problem and will try to solve using above formula.

Here, mean is 5

And toal number of values are 6 (i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8, x and y)

So, 5 = ( 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + x + y ) / 6

Thus, 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + x + y = 30

Thus, x + y = 30 - ( 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 )

Thus, x + y = 30 - 20

Therefore, x + y = 10

Answer:

by simple formula,

mean =  \frac{sum \: of \: all \: observations}{no. \: of \: observation}

=

 \frac{2 + 3 + 7 + 10 + x + y}{6}  =  \: 8 \\  \frac{22 + x + y}{6}  = 8 \\ x + y = 8 \times 6 - 22 \\ x + y = 26

hope helps ,
