Question:

If the midvalue of a class is 20 and the width of the class is 5, find the lower and upper limits of the class.

Solution:

Let the upper and lower limits are x and y respectively.

Now, (x + y)/2 = 20

=> x + y = 20 × 2

=> x + y = 40.....................eq.1

Again given,

class size = 5

=> x - y = 5 ........................eq.2

Add equation 1 and 2, we get

2x = 45

=> x = 45/2

=> x = 22.5

From equation 2

22.5 - y = 5

=> y = 22.5 - 5

=> y = 17.5

Answer:

So, lower limit = 17.5

So, lower limit = 17.5and upper limit = 22.5
