If the point C ( -1, 2) divides internally the line segment joining the points A (2, 5) and B (x , y) in the ratio 3 : 4, find the value of x2 - y 2 .

Answer:

 - 1 =  \frac{3x + 4 \times 2}{3 + 4}  =  \frac{3x + 8}{7}

3x + 8 =  - 7 \:  \: so \:  \: x =    - \frac{15}{3}  =  - 5

now,

2 =  \frac{3y + 4 \times 5}{3 + 4}  =  \frac{3y + 20}{7}

3y + 20 = 14 \:  \: i.e \: y =  \frac{ - 6}{3}  =  - 2

i.e,

 {x}^{2}  -  {y}^{2}  = ( { - 5)}^{2}  -  {( - 2)}^{2}  = 25 - 4 = 21 \:  \:  \: ans.
