Let the first number be x and another consecutive number be x+1

According to question

x \times (x + 1) = 72 \\ \\ {x}^{2} + x = 72 \\ \\ {x}^{2} + x - 72 = 0 \\ \\ {x}^{2} + 9x -8x - 72 = 0 \\ \\ x(x + 9) - 8(x + 9) =0 \\ \\ (x + 9)(x - 8) = 0 \\ \\ \\ so \: the \: numbers \: are \\ \\ x + 9 = 0 \\ \\ x = - 9 \\ \\ and \: \\ \\ (x - 8) = 0 \\ \\ x = 8 \\ \\ \\ so \: n \: is \: 8

The smaller number is 8 and larger number is 9

Hope it helps!
