Given :

  • Sum of the two numbers = 17
  • Difference of the two numbers = 5

To Find :

  • The difference between their squares = ?

Solution :

Let the numbers be “ x and y ”

So ,

According to the Question ,

 \mapsto  \boxed{\rm \: x + y = 17}

So ,

 \implies \rm \: x = 17 - y.....(i)

Now ,

We also know that ,

 \mapsto \boxed{  \rm \: x - y = 5}

Put the value of “x” from equation (i)

 \implies \rm \: 17 - y - y = 5

 \implies \rm \: 17 - 2y = 5

 \implies \rm \: 17 - 5 = 2y

 \implies \rm \:  \cancel2y =  \cancel{12}

 \implies  \boxed{\rm \: y = 6}

Now ,

put the value of “y” in equation(i)

 \implies \rm \: x = 17 - y

 \implies \rm \: x = 17 - 6

 \implies \boxed{ \rm \: x = 11}
