let the numbers be x&y
x+y=33..........(1)
x-y=15.............(2)
(1)+(2)=>
2x=48
=>x=24
now substituting x in (1) ,we get,
y=9
the smallest number is y which equals to9
Hope you understood it...............

The smaller number is 9.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the two numbers = x and y (x > y)

To find, the smaller number = ?

According to question,

x + y = 33             .....(1)

And

x - y = 15               .....(2)

Adding (1) and (2), we get

x + y + x - y = 33 + 15

⇒ 2x = 48

⇒ x = \dfrac{48}{2} =24

Put x = 24 in (1), we get

24 + y = 33

⇒ y = 33 -24 = 9

∴ x = 24 and y = 9

Hence, the smaller number is 9.
