let the two candidates be A and B .

where total no. of votes be = x

no. of votes for A=62/100*x

no. of votes for B=(100-62)/100*x (eq-1)

we know that B got 144 votes , so

38/100*x=144 (from eq-1)

on solving x=378.9

therefore x=379
