Let XOX’ and YOY’ be two fixed straight lines which at right angles, at point O. Then,

XOX’ is called axis of X or the X-axis or the abscissa.YOY’ is called the axis of Y or the Y-axis or the ordinateThe points plotted on the graph are real numbers termed as the Cartesian co-ordinates.

The X and Y axes divide the graph into 4 sections that are termed as the quadrants
