if their valency is 1 or 2 then they belong to group 1 or 2

but if their valency is 3 or 4 then they belong to group 13 or 14..

here,

for X = electronic configuration = 2,8,3

valency = 3 so, group = 13

for Y , = electronic configuration = 2,1

so group = 1.
