in english we pronounce cut = कट and for put = पुट.

Both the first consonant and the vowel are different.

English is not a phonetic language.The written and spoken language dont pretend to be similar.

U is short unless followed by another vowel.

If u is followed by a vowel the sound is long.

If there are two consonants after the u then the sound is short.
