If we catch ringing bell,the sound is stopped why

when we hold the bell we are not allowing the bell to vibrate in audible frequency due to the sound stops.

As we know sound is a vibration in air and in bell asound is heard due to this vibration only but when wet hold a bell these vibrations are not able to get transferred properly and so no sound is produced .
