4
x + 1/x = 4

On squaring both sides, we get

(x +1/x)^2 = (4)^2

=> (x)^2 + (1/x)^2 + 2(x)(1/x) = 16

=> x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2 = 16

=> x^2 + 1/x^2 = 14
