$squaring \: both \: side..$

$( {x + \frac{1}{x}) }^{2} = 25$

${x}^{2} + { \frac{1}{x} }^{2} + 2 \times x \times \frac{1}{x} = 25$

${x}^{2} + \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} } + 2 = 25$

$= {x}^{2} + \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} } = 25 - 2$

$= 23$
