If x=-2 and y=-5, then by simple observation x>y but: x/y=2/5 and 2/5 <1 this implies x/y<1 or x<y. Both statements contradict each other. How??

it's true that,

\frac{x}{y} < 1

but

x = - 2 \\ y = - 5

If we are multiplying with y on both sides, we are actually multiplying with a negative number (-5).

When we multiply on both sides with a negative number, the inequality is flipped.

therefore,

\frac{ - 2}{ - 5} < 1 \\ \\ \frac{( - 5)( - 2)}{ (- 5)} < 1( - 5) \\ \\ - 2 > - 5
