If x +√5=4 +√y then find x+y

We can rearrange the question and write it as x - √y = 4 - √5
Clearly, the x will be rational term and the root will be irrational, and thus x = 4, y = 5 (because √y = √ 5)

Therefore x + y = 4 + 5 = 9.
