Solution:

x-y=2  --1

x+y=4   --2

Adding 1 and 2

x+y+x-y=4+2

2x=6

x=\frac{6}{2}

x=3

Thus a =3

Now substitute the value in 1

3-y=2

3-2=y

1=y

Hence the value of a is 3 and b is 1
