Concept-

In the given equation x + 1/x , first square both the sides , then use the identity ( a + b )² = a² + b² + 2ab to find the value of  x² + 1/x².

Given-

Expression is given as : x + 1/x = 3

Find-

Find the value of x² + 1/x²

Solution-

x + 1/x = 3

Squaring on both sides we have

( x + 1/x )² = 3²

x² + 1/x² + 2 x ( 1/x ) = 9

Use the identity ,  ( a + b )² = a² + b² + 2ab

x² + 1/x² + 2 = 9

x² + 1/x² = 9 - 2

x² + 1/x² = 7

Therefore, the value of x² + 1/x² = 7.
