xy=-12

or x=-12/y

put in 1

-12/y+y=1

or y²-y-12=0

ie y²-4y+3y-12=0

(y-4)(y-3)

ie y=3,4

& x=-2,-3

now x-y=-5 or -7

& x²-y²=-5 or -7
