Method - to find the values like this, express x : y = a : b in the form x/a = y/b and take the value as k. From this you can find x, y in terms of k. Then put x = ka, y = kb in the required term and k gets cancelled from both the numerator and the denominator. You get the required ratio finally.

Solution :

Given x : y = 5 : 8

    or, x/y = 5/8

    or, x/5 = y/8 = k ( say )

Then, x = 5k , y = 8k

 Now, (4x - 2y) : (7x - 3y)

= (20k - 16k) : (35k - 24k)

                         = 4k : 11k

                             = 4 : 11

x.y =5:8

x/y=5:8

x/5=y/8

x=5 y=8

( 4x-16) :(35-24)

(20-16) : ( 35-24)

4 : 11

= 4:11
