If x+ y = 7/2 and xy = 5/2, find i) (x-y) ii) x2-y2

x+y = 7/2

So, (x+y)^2 = (7/2)^2

So, x^2 + 2xy + y^2 = 49/4

So, x^2 + y^2 = 49/4 - 2xy = 49/4 - 2*5/2

So, x^2 + y^2 = 29/4

Now, (x-y)^2 = x^2 + y^2 - 2xy

So, (x-y)^2 = 29/4 - 2*5/2

So, (x-y)^2 = 9/4

Therefore, x-y = Sq. Root of 9/4 = +3/2 or -3/2
