Answer: xy = 16

Step-by-step explanation:  Given

                                                   x + y = 9 --------------eq 1

                                                   x² +y² = 49 ------------eq 2

Using identity

   (x + y)² = x² + y² + 2xy

Rewrite the formula as..

(x + y)² - (x²+ y²) = 2xy ----------- eq 3

Now,

    From eq 1 and 2    putting the values in eq 3

(9)² - (49) = 2xy

⇒ 81 - 49 = 2xy

⇒ 2xy = 32

⇒ xy = 16

∴ the required value of xy is 16
