Rewrite the formula as..
(x + y)² - (x²+ y²) = 2xy ----------- eq 3

From eq 1 and 2 putting the values in eq 3
(9)² - (49) = 2xy
⇒ 81 - 49 = 2xy
⇒ 2xy = 32
⇒ xy = 16
