 x² + (1/x²) = 2 + 16

 x² + (1/x²) - 2 = 16

x² + (1/x²) - 2 × x × (1/x) = 16

[ a² + b² - 2 ab = (a - b)²]

(x - 1/x)² = 16

(x - 1/x) = 4
