5=3x+12,

5-12=3x,

then

3x=-7,

x=-7/3

Answer:

The value of x is -2.33.

Step-by-step explanation:

  • Here two equations express two straight lines. First equation y=3x+12 indicates a straight line with slope 3 and it intersects the Y-axis at (0,12) point.

               The second equation y = 5 indicates a straight line parallel to X-axis. By solving two equations, the obtained value of (x,y) is the point at which both the lines will intersect.

  • The given equations are y = 3x+12 ....................(1)

                                 and  y = 5 ..........................(2)

In both the equations (1) and (2), left hand sides are equal. So right hand sides also be equal. We can write, 3x + 12 = 5

                                                          3x = 5 - 12

                                                          3x = - 7

                                                           x = -7 ÷ 3 = - 2.33

 ∴ The value of x is -2.33.
