If y = a + (b/x)
where a, b are real numbers, y = 1 when x = -1 and y = 5 when x = -5

then find the value of a+b.

  • a+(b/-1)=1
  • a-b=1
  • a=1+b......(i)

then, if x=-5, y=5,

  • a+(b/-5)=5
  • (1+b)-b/5=5
  • (5+5b-b)/5=5
  • 4b=(5×5)-5
  • b=5......

As b=5,

a=1+5=6
