Labour was not easy to mobilise as people were busy in rice cultivation. The ryotis wanted to grow rice but in this system the ryotis were forced to cultivate indigo on the best soil which exhausted rapidly so that the land was left fallow and no food crops were grown.
People wanted to grow rice on the fertile land where they were forced to grow indigo. Indigo cultivation needed lot of ploughs but the ploughs were busy in rice cultivation. Labour was not easy to mobilise as people were busy in rice cultivation.
