We can distinguish between metals and non-metals by strucking the object and if it produces a ringing sound , then it is a metal.OR You can check whether it is lustrous or not .If it is, then it is a metal

By its physical appearance like I'd it is hard and lustrous it is metal, if it is good conductor of heat and electricity it is a metal
While the substance is sift( it may be hard too) it is a non- metal, if it is non-ductile and non-sonorous it would be non- metal
