If you are trying to push a heavy box on a horizontal surface there are various forces acting up on it for example the force of friction acts in the opposite direction of motion. Limiting friction acts upon the body and it is a self adjusting force and when the body overcomes the limiting friction it begins to slide on the table the surface and sliding friction comes into play. The magnitude of force required to overcome the force of friction is equal to the force required to make a body slide on the surface.
