The food passes through the following parts and processes:

  1. The food is initially partially digested in the mouth and buccal cavity, where the starch/sugar present is targeted.
  2. Food moves down into the stomach through peristalsis as small bolus and partial digestion of protein and lipid stabilisation occurs and minimal amounts of nutrients are absorbed.
  3. The food then moves to the small intestine where complete digestion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins occur and maximum reabsorption takes place.
  4. The remaining water and minerals are reabsorbed in the large intestine.
  5. Fecal matter passes out of the anus and one digestive cycle is complete.
