Let the two numbers be x and y. Both x and y are variables.

The sum of two numbers is 9 ,it can be written as x+y=9 --------(1)

and, their difference is 5 ,it can be written as x-y=5 ----------(2)

From (1) and (2), solve the equations simultaneously :-

x+y=9

x-y=5

2x =14

=>x = 7 ----(3)

Putting the value of x in the equation (1),

=>7+y = 9

=>y = 2.

The value of x and y are 7 and 2.
