if you hold a metal rod over a flame the end of the rod away from the flame also get hot .why does this happen​

The atoms which are close to the flame get heated, which means their vibrations become more energetic. The amplitudes of their vibrations become larger. This growth of the amplitudes of vibrations is then transmitted to their neighboring atoms which cause them to start vibrating more energetically and thus on and on until the intensified vibrations of atoms reach the end of rod which is away from the flame. As the amplitudes of the atomic vibrations increase, we feel the object as hotter.

This is called Heat Conduction and it differs significantly among the various types of materials. Metals are usually very good heat conductors while rubber, plastic and heat-insulation materials are very bad heat conductors.
