If you keep ice at 0°C and water at 0°C in
either of your hands, in which hand you will

the main reason is due to latent heat of vaporization

Because ice requires additional heat called "Latent heat" to first melt down to water. But at this time, the temperature of this water is still zero degree celcius. After this, the water absorbs heat from the nearby object that is to be cooled.

so putting it all together, 

Ice cooling capacity = latent heat + average heat

but that of water = average heat alone.
