When you place your ear to an iron railing or an iron pipe, there are two mediums for sound to travel:
1. Solid medium (The iron)
2. Gaseous medium (The air inside it).
Hence, since solids are good conductors of sound, the sound which you hear first, is transmitted by the iron and the next sound is transmitted by the air particles. So you heat sound twice.

First the sound comes through the iron railing then the sound comes through the air at a lower speed than the sound which came through the iron railing.
