if the capacitors are identical, you’ll store the same energy if you put them in series of if you put them in parallel.

If they are different kinds, then it depends. If they have the same voltage rating but different capacitances, then put them in parallel so you can put the same max voltage on them all and they will each hold the max energy they are able to.

If, by chance, each of your different capacitors is such that CV is constant, then put them in series. They will each store the same charge at the max voltage and hence max energy.
