(ii) Considering the following experiment, answer the questions given below it:
Take 10 ml ethanol in a big test tube. Cut sodium metal into 2-3 pieces of a
serial grain size. Put the sodium pieces into the ethanol in the test tube and
fix the gas delivery tube to the test tube. Take a burning candle near the
outlet of the gas delivery tube and observe.
(a) Which is the combustible gas coming out of the gas delivery tube?
(b) Why do the sodium pieces appear to dance on the surface of ethanol?
(C) Do you see gas bubble released from the piece of magnesium ribbon, when
the above procedure, using magnesium ribbon instead of sodium?
(d) Does magnesium metal react with ethanol ?
(e) Explain the reaction of ethanol and Sodium with the help of chemical
equation.

Answer:

a)hydrogen bubbles from the delivery tube to escape for a minute or two to expel all the air from the flask. Fill one of the water-filled test tubes to the mark with hydrogen by holding it vertically, with its mouth under water, over the end of the delivery tube.

b)if a small piece of sodium metalis dropped into some ethanol it reacts steadily to give of bubbles of hydrogen gas and leaves a colourless solution of sodium Ethoxide which with bubbles seems to dance...

c)The burning magnesium ribbon produces light of sufficient intensity to cause temporary loss of sight. Avoid looking directly at the light source. The burning of magnesium in air produces intense heat which can cause burns and initiate combustion in flammable materials.

d)If you are trying to prepare by reacting of magnesium metal with ethanol in the presence of some initiator like iodine then the reaction will start and will complete at higher temperature and if the moisture content is at higher side in the used ethanol then reaction will take more time for completion and if the .

e)Ethanol reacts with metallic sodium to form a salt namely sodium ethanoate. 2C6H5OH+ 2Na->2C6H5ONa+H2 ( gas evolved).
