ii. Observe the following reaction carefully and answer the sub-questions.
NH, + HCI →NH,CI
a. What are the salt and acid in the above reaction?
b. Which is the base in the above reaction? Is it weak or strong?
c. Write a reaction showing dissociation of this base in water.
Answers
Answers for the reaction are given below-
A. Salt in the reaction is NH4Cl named as ammonium chloride and acid is HCl named as hydrochloric acid. HCl is referred to as acid because it donates hydrogen ion.
B. NH3 commonly known as ammonia is the base in the reaction. Ammonia is a weak base in nature. This is because nitrogen atom has lone pair of electrons which accepts hydrogen ions. Thus ammonium ions are formed, which can disassociate to release hydrogen ions making it weak base.
C. NH3 + H2O <=> NH4+ + OH-
NH4+ <=> NH3 + H+
In the reaction,
NH3 is ammonia, H2O is water, NH4+ is ammonium ions, OH- is hydroxyl ions and H+ is hydrogen ions.
a) In the above reaction the salt is NH4CI and the acid is HCI .
b) In the about reaction the basis of NH3 and it is a weak base .
c) NH3 + H2O ----> NH4 + OH
