3 answer- In 1856, a new type of rifle, called Enfield Rifle, was provided to the army. Its cartridges had a greased cap which had to be bitten off before loading. News spread that the grease used in the cartridges was made from the fat of cows and pigs. This made Hindus and Muslims apprehensive as Hindus consider the cows sacred and do not eat beef and while Muslime consider pigs dirty and do not eat pork. They felt that the British were not attempting to insult their religious sentiments. This proved to be the main and immediate cause of the revolt of 1857.
