The birds did not eat the bread crumbs because-

Option C- they were also  mourning.

Explanation:

In the story "The Portrait of a Lady", the grandmother and the narrator shared a special bonding between them when they used to live together in the village. The narrator's constant companion was his grandmother. When they came to the city and the narrator was admitted to an English medium school, their bonding began to get loose.

But when the narrator started going university and then went to abroad for higher studies, his connection with his grandmother got almost snapped. During this time, those sparrows were her only companions with whom she found some solace. She found her pleasure in talking with those birds and feeding them. Those birds too arrived at the same time everyday to give her company.

On the day of the grandmother's death, those birds arrived as usual and was sitting beside her dead body. The narrator's mother thought that they had come for food and gave them bread crumbs in the way grandma used to give. But when the corpse was taken away, mother noticed that those birds hadn't touched a single bread crumb and flew away as soon as the dead body was taken away. It was as if they had come not for food but to mourn on the grandmother's death.
