The great nationalist leader, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, founded the Banaras Hindu University in the year 1916. Dr Annie Besant also played an important role in the formation of the BHU. The Banaras Hindu University played an important role in the Indian independence movement

- The purpose of establishing Banaras Hindu college was to awaken the need for education in every indian.
- University of Calcutta ,Mumbai and Madras were established by British.
- Gandhiji and Tagore thought differently about the Western education. Gandhiji used to thought that the Western education would question the Indian culture while Tagore considered Western education important for learning and the mental growth of the people.
- The reasons to promote English education are-
- It introduced the terms democracy and nationalism to the people .
- It caused national awakening among the people.
- the people were becoming literate and known to political terms.
- it was important for the society specially the weaker section to prosper.
