Now we need to find a and b

Y = a x + b

Y is a function since for every values of x, we get different values of y.  

X = 45.5, y = 65.5                                 x = 35, y = 56

 So 65.5 = a x 45.5 + b-------(1)          56 = a x 35 + b--------(2)

Solving two equations we get

45.5 a – 35 x + b – b = 65.5 – 56

   10.5 a = 9.5

      a = 9.5 / 10.5

     a = 0.9

So b = 45.5 x 0.9 + b = 65,5

b = 65.5 – 40.95

b = 24.5

So y = 0.9 x + 24.5

Now we need to find height of woman whose forehand is 40 cm

x = 40

So y = 0.9 x 40 + 24.5

    y = 60.5

Now height of woman is 60.5 inches.

If y = 53.3

53.3 = 0.9 x + 24.5

0.9 x = 53.3 – 24.5

 x = 28.8 / 0.9

x = 32

So length of forehand is 32 inches.
