The Third Republic:
- The majority of Frenchmen initially supported the monarchy's restoration. The elections of 1871 were won by monarchists. On the question of who would become the future monarch, they disagreed.
- The Comte de Chambord was a highly traditional man who was aged and childless. The pre-Revolutionary flag was to take the place of the tricolour, in his opinion. This did not go over well. He was expected to make way for the Comte de Paris. He did not, however, give up his title to the Orleanist claimant.
- Adolphe Thiers, the first president, was a moderate republican. "There is only one throne of France, and two men cannot sit on it," he remarked. Thiers gained a lot of political enemies and was succeeded by Marshal McMahon, a monarchist.
- The monarchists' inability to settle on a strong candidate aided the republicans' cause. The Republicans had been briefly demonised by the Commune, but when public opinion shifted in their favour, they won several by-elections.
- France became a republic when a new constitution was enacted in 1875. By one vote, it was approved. When the Republicans won a majority in the Chamber of Deputies, this new structure was solidified in 1876. (parliament). The senate was still under the hands of monarchists.
- The republicans won the 1877 elections, and McMahon stepped down as president in 1879. The government left Versailles and headed back to Paris.
- After it, republicans held both the office of President and Prime Minister. Republicans' win was reflected in a number of political measures.
