Friction is very useful. Some of its advantages and disadvantages are:
Advantages
1. Brakes of a car use friction to stop the vehicle.
2. Friction makes many kinds of motion possible.
3. When a person is walking or running, he uses the friction with the ground to move his body forward, to turn left or right, or to stop.
4. As friction is a resistance force which slows down or prevents motion, it is needed in many applications to prevent slipping or sliding.
5. Friction between the sole of a shoe and the surface of the ground prevents a person from slipping.
6. The furniture does not move as there is friction between the base and the floor surface.
Disadvantages

1. It produces unnecessary heat. For instance, car engines become hotter because of friction.
2. Extra friction makes it difficult to move an object, like sliding a box across the floor or walking in deep snow.
3. The force of friction acts in the opposite direction that the object is moving, so it helps to slow down the motion of moving objects.

4. Any device which has moving parts can wear out rapidly due to friction. An eraser is an example of friction wearing out an object.

5. Friction can create heat energy, this can overheat and damage an object. For example a car could spin its wheels so much that it causes the tires to smoke.
