This is a simple currency conversion problem.

We shall use the unitary method to solve this.

We shall first find the value of €1 in dollars.

Then convert Euros into dollars.

Sam spends €50

He also has €34 left.

So Euros he started with = €50 + €34 = €84

Now $ 1 is equal to €1.40

So €1 = $  \frac{1}{1.40}

Hence €84 =  \frac{1}{1.40}(84) =  60

Sam started with $60.

Given:

$ 1 = € 1.40

Spend = € 50

Save = € 34

To find:

The amount in dollars he had in the beginning.

Solution:

Total money in € = Spend + Save

Substituting,

50 + 34

Total money in € = 84

Converting,

Total money in $ = 84 / 1.40

Total money in $ = 60
