If I were a traffic policeman, I would go to the place of my duty. It would be a busy traffic spot. It would be a traffic light. I would have to be very alert and vigilant during the peak-hour. I would also have to tackle the offenders in hurry to reach their places of destination.
I would catch youngsters trying to jump the traffic lights. I would also have to take help of my fellow cops on duty. I would catch the school going children riding bikes and scooters without helmet and license. Then they would make funny excuses.
I would often see people in hurry banging their vehicles into one another. Then there would ensue a heated argument between them and each one tried hard to prove it was the other’s fault!
Seriously, this duty of the traffic cop in India is quite a challenging task!
I was given duty at the roundtana which was always filled with traffic. It is a main junction and from there, the traffic gets diverted to four different places so, the road is always busy.
I reached the spot at 8 a.m. and in one hour’s time, the peak time will start. I was mentally getting prepared for it, when a school going boy was cycling and was going towards the opposite side. Red-light was on, but he didn’t stop. He cycled very fast at that time, I saw a bike coming at a great speed and the green signal was on. I started to sweat because I know for sure that this boy was going to be hit. It was a miracle, the boy cycled fast and the man on the bike made a curve, circling the boy and went. Ooooh! What a narrow escape!
I knew the school, went straight to the principal and spoke about the incident. The boy was called for and he was given a severe warning for behaving like that. It was then he said that if he had waited for the red signal, he wouldn’t have been allowed to write the exam and said that he got delayed in helping his mother, who was very sick.
I had a doubt on that boy and went to his house. The boy’s mother was shouting at him for being lazy, when he saw me, he got frightened and ran away. I didn’t know whether to be angry or whether to admire at the smartness of the boy in making the Principal feel pity for him.
