Once I was traveling to Chennai by train. A curious incident happened. A fellow passenger took out his cigarette, lighted it and began smoking. Soon the entire compartment was filled with the unwholesome smoke. Feeling outraged I had the following argument with him:

I: Excuse me, Sir, smoking is not allowed at public places! May be you are not aware of the new rules, regulations, and advisory on smoking at public places! Kindly, put your cigarette out as all of the fellow passengers are feeling uncomfortable.

The Smoker: I am sorry! But how can my smoking cause inconvenience to anyone except me? If I am smoking I am hurting my own lungs; how can others be affected by it?

I: Sir, what I am talking about is passive smoking. Smoking cigarettes is not only hazardous to the health of smokers, but also to the health of the people around them. A smoker unwittingly causes damage to the people around. That’s why the Government has put a ban on smoking in trains.

The Smoker: I am sorry once again! Let me put out my cigarette! Thanks for making me wiser and aware on the issue.

Me: Sir, I request you to kindly put off that cigarette. It is causing a lot of inconvenience to all of us who are sharing this space with you.

Smoker: Why should I put it off? I enjoy smoking and as an Indian citizen, I have the right to do what I want.

Me: Yes, of course. But, you should also realize that it is illegal to smoke in public places.

Smoker: So, I get it that you are trying to say I have no right to sit in my place and enjoy a smoke.

Me: I did not mean to deny your sitting in your place. But, passive smoking is equally harmful and we are definitely not interested in putting our health at stake.

Smoker: Ha ha! If that is your concern, then I suggest you close your nose so that you will not inhale the smoke.

Me: Well, I think I have politely told you to put the cigarette off. If you have no intention of doing so, I am sorry that I have no other option than complaining to the concerned authorities.
