The Best Journey of my Life

I travelled by train several times in my life but the most memorable journey I ever had in the recent times was the one I had taken from Mettupalayam to Ooty (also called Udagamandalam) through the Nilgiri hills. Though there were taxi and bus services on this route, we opted for the train journey as the railway line is famous for its spectacular scenic beauty.

The train was started during the British Raj in 1899 as they used to escape to the cool mountains during the hot Indian summers. The train looks like a toy train and it has a steam engine which was earlier a traditional coal-fired engine. The train takes you through breathtaking valleys and scenic mountain views and it is a rel pleasure to be on this journey. Conoor, which is famous for it's tea, falls on this line and the train takes you through the beautiful tea gardens.

The Nilgiri railway line is 46 kms long and the train goes through multiple number of tunnels and over several big and small bridges. The aspect that I  didn't appreciate was that the tickets were costlier than a regular train service and the seats in the second class compartments are not comfortable. The train is crowded and I found it difficult to appreciate the scenic beauty outside. I was told by the co-passengers that the seats in the first class are costlier but more comfortable. But I feel travelling in second class has its own beauty.

The journey was an unforgettable expereince and once in a life-time expereince.

In 1854, plans were made to assemble a mountain railroad from Mettupalayam to the Nilgiri Hills.

Be that as it may, it took the chiefs 45 years to slice through the bureaucratic formality and complete the development.

The line was finished and opened for traffic in June 1899. It was worked first by the Madras Railway under a concurrence with the legislature.

The Madras Railway Company kept on dealing with the railroad line for the benefit of the administration for quite a while until the South Indian Railway organization bought it.
