Here is what Tyl could possibly tell his friends:
“When I met the Archduke and showed him my painting, he was highly impressed. He immediately announced that I was the new court painter. He doesn’t need to ask anyone- he is the powerful Archduke afterall. I was both happy and taken by surprise! Then he decided that I would paint the portrait of all the courtiers the next morning. I was thrilled. It was an honour for me, but it turned out to be a dangerous mission. The Archduke instructed me to paint the courtiers as realistically as possibly, which I thought was fair enough. However, later the courtiers came to me and ordered me to paint them as beautifully as possible, or I would be beheaded! I was in a fix. I could not disobey the Archduke or the courtiers. I couldn’t paint the portraits and I couldn’t not paint it! I did not know what to do. In the morning, the courtiers posed for me, and the job was done. When I showed the painting to them, they looked puzzled. Then I told them that the painting was a special one. Only those with royal blood in their veins could see the painting; the others would only see a blank canvas. Suddenly all the courtiers looked extremely pleased with the painting. I was tremendously relieved. My plan had worked and the courtiers had all fallen for it! It was a plain canvas indeed, with nothing on it. But I learned quite something out of it- that it’s no use getting worked up. The trick is to stay calm and use your brains.”
