If we do not have symbols for elements then there will be a confusion while writing the short forms of elements.

  • When displaying a chemical reaction, we tend to use the symbols instead of writing the complete elements name.
  • Each element has a unique symbol due to which the writing of a chemical reaction becomes easier.
  • If there were no symbols, then it would be difficult to write chemical reactions and there would be confusion for elements beginning with the same letter.

IF THERE WERE NO SYMBOLS GIVEN TO THE ELEMENTS, THERE WOULD'VE BEEN A LOT OF CONFUSION. EVERYONE WOULD JUST ASSUME THE SYMBOLS ACCORDING TO THEM WHICH WOULD LEAD CONFUSION FOR OTHERS.

Explanation:

  • Symbols were given to elements to identify them and use them to write formulas.
  • They are used as short forms, you need not to write the full name of the chemical compound, just use the symbols  for that.
  • But there were no symbols, then we would have to write the whole name of the chemical compound each time in a chemical reaction, which would've been a waste of time.
  • Then people would just assume the symbols according to them which would create a lot of confusion. For example if two people were exchanging there discoveries through mail or fax and they would've used their own symbols, then the whole thing would be just confusing.
